How streaming services block VPNs, and why that decides the ranking

Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Hulu and Prime Video all do the same thing: they compare your IP address against lists of ranges known to belong to datacentres and VPN providers, and refuse to play if there is a match. They do not detect “a VPN”; they detect an address. That means the provider that works is the one with the most addresses that are not yet on the list, in the country whose library you want, and the operational effort to retire flagged ones and add fresh ones.

Server count is therefore the single most predictive number, which is why NordVPN, with the largest network, leads. Some providers help further: NordVPN’s SmartPlay and ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer handle the DNS side so that devices which cannot run a VPN still get the unblocked library, and CyberGhost labels servers by the service they are tuned for.

Speed, and why 4K is the test

Streaming is not demanding in throughput terms — 25 Mbps sustained for 4K, 5 for HD — but it is unforgiving about consistency. A VPN that keeps 90% of a 100 Mbps line is invisible; one that drops to 15 Mbps at peak hours on a distant server will buffer 4K every evening. WireGuard-family protocols and a server in the same region as the library are the two things that matter. Our own throughput tests, on a stated line, are pending; until then the speed dimension is excluded from the score rather than borrowed from someone else’s numbers.

Devices that cannot run a VPN

Consoles, older smart TVs and some streaming boxes have no VPN app. Three routes: a DNS-based unblocker from the provider (ExpressVPN MediaStreamer, Surfshark and NordVPN Smart DNS), which changes the apparent region without encrypting anything; a VPN router (ExpressVPN’s Aircove, or any router running the provider’s firmware) that puts the whole house behind the tunnel; or sharing a connection from a laptop running the VPN. Apple TV has had native VPN apps since tvOS 17, and Fire TV and Android TV run them directly.

Where the libraries are

The US has the most originals and licensed network shows; the UK and Canada have the American sitcoms that are on other services in the US; Japan has the deepest anime catalogue; Korea the K-dramas. The Netflix library explorer on this site answers “which country has this show” for the titles people ask about most, with a date on the answer.

What we have not tested

Unblocking status per service and per provider comes from user reports and provider statements at the re-check date. We have not yet run our own monthly streaming checks on paid subscriptions — that is on the roadmap, and when it lands, the basis column on every review changes from “user reports” to “our test”.
