The trick, explained once

VPN marketing has converged on one model: a multi-year plan advertised as a monthly figure, with the renewal price in small text. “$2.19/month” is a $53 charge today for 24 months. At month 25 the plan renews at the standard rate — for Surfshark about $79 a year, for NordVPN about $139 — and the effective monthly cost doubles or triples. The provider’s acquisition cost, which includes affiliate commissions of 40–100% of the first payment, is recovered on that renewal. This is not a scam; it is disclosed. It is also the single most common complaint in the App Store reviews we analyse every month, which suggests the disclosure is not working.

This page ranks on the number that survives the trick: total paid over three years, divided by 36. It changes the order. Providers with no renewal jump — Mullvad, IVPN, Windscribe, PIA’s yearly plan — rise; providers with a spectacular intro and a spectacular renewal fall. Reading the table on each review

Every review on this site has a pricing table with four columns: intro total, monthly equivalent, renewal total, and true cost per month over three years. Where the renewal price is not clearly published, the last column says “unconfirmed” instead of a guess. That is deliberate. A provider that does not state its renewal price is telling you something, and we would rather show the gap than fill it.

How to actually pay the cheap price

Three options at month 25. Cancel and re-subscribe as a new customer at the intro rate, which most providers allow with a different email and some allow with the same one. Switch to another provider’s intro plan — the service quality among the picks here is close enough that alternating between two of them every two years is a legitimate strategy. Or contact support before the renewal and ask for the current promotional rate; several providers will match it rather than lose the account. What does not work is forgetting, which is the default.

When cheap is not the point

If the concern is privacy, Mullvad’s flat rate and account model are worth the small premium over the budget picks. If it is streaming, Surfshark and NordVPN’s larger networks are worth theirs. If it is China or Iran, price is irrelevant and the country pages apply. A cheap VPN is the right choice for the most common use — public Wi-Fi, occasional region changes, ISP privacy — and the wrong one when the use is specific.
