How to read a VPN speed result
The number that matters is the ratio, not the absolute. A 300 Mbps line that drops to 240 with the VPN on has lost 20%, which is typical and unnoticeable for anything short of large downloads. The same line dropping to 60 has lost 80%, which means a bad server, a bad protocol choice, or a provider that is throttling. Try a nearer server and WireGuard before blaming the provider.
What we test
Latency is the median of ten small requests to the nearest Cloudflare edge; jitter is how much those varied. Download pulls a sequence of increasingly large files and takes the best sustained throughput; upload pushes random data the same way. Everything goes to Cloudflare's public speed endpoints, which are what their own speed.cloudflare.com uses. The test is single-connection, so on very fast lines (500 Mbps+) a browser will under-report; the before/after comparison still holds.
Our own numbers
Reviews on this site will carry speed results measured with this same method on a stated line, with dates. Until a provider has been tested, its review says "pending" rather than borrowing a number from somewhere else.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure how much my VPN slows me down?
Run this test with the VPN off, note the numbers, connect the VPN, run it again. The second result as a percentage of the first is your VPN overhead. A good WireGuard-family connection to a nearby server typically keeps 80–95% of download speed; OpenVPN and distant servers lose more. The page keeps the last run so you can compare on screen.
Why is the result different from Speedtest.net?
Different server, different method. This test downloads and uploads to Cloudflare's network from the nearest edge, so it measures the path from you to the closest big peering point. Speedtest picks a server hosted by an ISP, often yours. Neither is "wrong"; use the same test before and after the VPN and compare like with like.
What is a good latency for a VPN?
Under 20 ms added is excellent, 20–50 is normal for a server in your country, 100+ means the server is far away or overloaded. Gaming and video calls care about latency more than throughput.
Does this test use a lot of data?
About 35 MB per run by default (25 down, 10 up). On a metered mobile connection, use the light mode, which uses around 8 MB.
Is my result sent to you?
No. The test talks to Cloudflare's speed endpoints directly from your browser and computes the numbers locally. We do not see them. Copying the result link puts the numbers in the URL so you can share them; that is the only way they leave your browser.
Why is my upload slow but download fine?
Most home connections are asymmetric by design (cable and many fibre plans), so upload is a fraction of download with or without a VPN. If upload is fine without the VPN and collapses with it, the provider's server is congested or your protocol is being throttled — try WireGuard or a different server.
