    Why browser checks are not enough for torrenting

    Every "is my VPN working" page tests the browser. A torrent client is a separate program with its own network binding, and it is the program that gets your address into a public swarm where copyright monitors collect it. Split tunnelling, interface binding and IPv6 all behave differently for it. The only test that counts is the one that asks the client what it announced — which is what this page does, using a tracker we run.

    Reading the result

    The address should be the VPN's, which you can see in the step-3 line if this browser is also on the VPN. A different public address is your real one. Two addresses where one is IPv6 means the client is announcing over IPv6 outside the tunnel — disable IPv6 in the client or the OS, or use a VPN that tunnels it.

    The fix that matters most

    Bind the client to the VPN's network interface. In qBittorrent it is Settings → Advanced → Network interface; pick the VPN adapter (often "tun0", "utun", "wg0" or the provider's name). Once bound, the client cannot send anything when the VPN is down, which is a kill switch that does not depend on the VPN app noticing a drop.

    Frequently asked questions

    How does the torrent IP check work?

    Your torrent client announces itself to a tracker so other peers can find it, and the tracker sees the address it announced from. We give you a magnet link whose only tracker is ours, tagged with a one-time token. When your client announces, our edge records the address for that token, and this page shows it. There is no content in the torrent; nothing downloads.

    The address shown is my real one. What now?

    Your torrent client is not using the VPN. Common causes: the VPN app has split tunnelling excluding the client; the client is bound to the wrong network interface; or the VPN dropped and there is no kill switch. Bind the client to the VPN interface (qBittorrent: Advanced → Network interface) and run the check again.

    Why does it show two addresses?

    Usually an IPv4 and an IPv6 announce, or the client announcing before and after a VPN reconnect. If either is your real address, that is a leak. IPv6 leaks in torrent clients are common because many VPNs tunnel IPv4 only.

    Is this safe? Does it download anything?

    The magnet link points at a hash with no content and a tracker that never returns peers, so your client connects to nothing but our tracker and transfers nothing. Remove it from the client after the test.

    What do you store?

    The address your client announced, keyed by the random token in your link, for ten minutes, so this page can show it to you. Then it expires. The token is generated in your browser and we cannot connect it to anything else.

    Which VPNs are safest for torrenting?

    Ones with a kill switch that works at the firewall level, port forwarding if you need seeding speed, a no-logs audit and a jurisdiction that does not hand over subscriber data on copyright notices. The torrenting list on this site scores those specifically.
