How to cancel a VPN subscription, and actually get the refund

Where to cancel depending on where you bought it, how the App Store and Google Play refund processes differ from the provider's

First: work out where you bought it

This is the whole problem. A VPN subscription can live in one of four places, and you must cancel it where it lives:

Cancelling in the wrong place does nothing, and the charge arrives anyway. In the App Store review analysis this site runs every month, billing and auto-renewal is the single most common complaint theme across nearly every VPN app, and most of those complaints describe exactly this.

Cancelling, by platform

iPhone or iPad: Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → select the VPN → Cancel Subscription. Access continues until the end of the paid period. Deleting the app does not cancel.

Android: Play Store → profile icon → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions → the VPN → Cancel.

The provider’s website: sign in, find Account, Billing or Subscription, and turn off auto-renewal. Some providers hide this behind a support chat, which is legal in most places and worth noting when you choose a provider.

PayPal: even after cancelling with the provider, check PayPal → Settings → Payments → Automatic payments, and cancel the billing agreement there too.

Getting money back

Bought on the provider’s website. The money-back guarantee applies: 30 days at NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton, PIA and hide.me; 45 days at CyberGhost on longer plans; 60 days at Norton; 14 days at Mullvad; 3 days at Windscribe. Ask through support and quote the guarantee. Most providers pay without argument because the guarantee is a marketing asset.

Bought through Apple. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find the charge and request a refund. Apple decides case by case; asking promptly and honestly works more often than not. The VPN company cannot process this for you no matter what its support says.

Bought through Google. Play Store → Payments and subscriptions → Budget and order history → the order → Request a refund. Within 48 hours it is usually automatic; after that it goes to Google, then to the developer.

Charged after the intro term ended. This is not a billing error, it is the renewal. Providers advertise a two-year price and renew at the standard yearly rate, often two to three times higher. Some will refund a renewal charged within a few days if you ask; all of them would rather offer a discount than lose you, so ask for the current promotional rate before asking for the money back.

Preventing the next one

The day you buy, put two things in your calendar: the renewal date, and the renewal price. The true cost calculator on this site will tell you both for any plan, and the cheap VPN list ranks providers on what they cost after renewal rather than before — which reorders the market considerably.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel a VPN I bought on my iPhone?

Settings → your name at the top → Subscriptions → the VPN → Cancel Subscription. Deleting the app does not cancel it, and the VPN company usually cannot cancel an App Store subscription for you. This single misunderstanding is the most common complaint in the thousands of App Store reviews we analyse each month.

How do I get a refund from Apple or Google?

Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, choose the charge, request a refund. Google: play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions or the Play Store app. Both decide case by case and both are more likely to agree if you ask within a few days of the charge and have not used the service since.

Does the money-back guarantee apply to app store purchases?

No. A provider's 30-day or 45-day guarantee covers purchases made on its own website, where it controls the payment. If Apple or Google took the money, their refund policy applies instead, and the provider cannot override it.

What if I am charged after cancelling?

Check where the subscription actually lives — people frequently cancel on the website while the live subscription is in the App Store, or the reverse. If it was genuinely cancelled and you were still charged, contact the payment platform first (Apple, Google, PayPal) and the provider second, with the cancellation confirmation.

How do I avoid the renewal price entirely?

Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you buy, with the renewal price in the note. A week before, decide: re-subscribe at the intro rate with a new account, switch providers, or contact support and ask them to match the current promotion, which several providers will do to keep you.
